How the Ring-A-Ding Baby Sling Was Born

They say necessity is the mother of invention, and that was certainly the case with Ring-A-Ding Baby Slings. In dire need of a way to soothe and connect with an amazingly hypersensitive, high-needs, colicky baby, I went on the hunt for a carrier that would work for us.

I went searching online for a baby sling. Everything I found was over $50. My husband had just lost his job, and I was absolutely not going to spend that kind of money on anything, nevermind something I could make myself. Heeeeyyyyy, I thought, Something I can make for myself....Ding Ding Ding! We have a winner!!

I already had plenty of fabric on hand, all I needed were the rings. As soon as they arrived, I was off and running. Of course, the prototype was pretty rough, and I had to re-work the ring attachments a few times, but the resulting product was fantastically useful: A comfortable fanned shoulder with a super-strong, double zig-zag seam, and elegant, finished edges all the way around.

The very best part was I now had a baby who didn't cry all the time. He was happy! He actually smiled, and cooed, and gurgled, and made happy noises. I was so relieved (and in a bit of disbelief) that something as simple as wearing my baby had made such a profound difference in the poor little fella. That's him on the right-->

Sling Construction

Each baby sling is hand made by me, and tested by Gus. I use aluminum sling rings that are manufactured specifically for use in baby slings, and are tested by the manufacturer for strength and quality.

I turn and topstitch the outer edges, creating a smooth, finished edge. The rings are attached with a simple, fan-style shoulder, creating a perfectly smooth seam that won't dig or bind, and cups your shoulder very comfortably. I use a super-strong zigzag stitch for the shoulder, and double the seam for added security.

Unless noted in the item description, Ring-A-Ding Slings are machine washable. Every now and then, I come across a fabric I just can't resist, and sometimes that fabric is dry clean only. If you'd like to take a chance and machine wash it, that's up to you, but I'd recommend saving that one for special occasions, and sending it to the cleaner when it needs sprucing up.

Pricing

Prices start at just $35 each for the cotton print ring slings. Most folks will never need anything fancier than that, but if you have a yen for luxury, you can always go with the batiks, brocades, and dupioni silks.
